GLUG mission, vision and goals

Mission

  • Promote the use of Linux in Gauteng.
  • Provide community service (e.g. assisting new users, no commercial responsibility).

Goals

Short-term goals:

Financials and mandatory requirements

  • At present GLUG is not a legal entity.
  • Do we need finances?
  • If LPA still exists and is registered, we can consider using LPA as the legal entity to handle GLUG finances etc.

Funding ideas

  • Sell T-shirts? We can consider approaching Henti about T-shirts.

GLUG Logo Competition

  • A competition will be organised on the mailing list.
  • Provisionally to close end of January.
  • A prize will be arranged.
  • Please have a look at GLUG Logo competition guidelines.

Formation of interim committee

  • The current interim committee consists of all the attendees of the meeting.
  • It was decided that a committee was required.
  • How are members defined? GLUG members must:
    • Register on a site (JP to investigate).
    • Subscribe to at least one GLUG mailing list.
    • Attended a meeting in person.
  • Committee will be elected annually at the AGM.

Drawing up of constitution

  • Amend CLUG constitution.
  • A draft constitution will be sent to the mailing lists in advance of the AGM, for adoption at the AGM.

Key events and meetings

  • Next meeting will be in the last week of January, in Centurion or Midrand.
  • Meetings will in the interim be held on the last Friday of (most) long months (Jan, Mar etc.).
  • The AGM will be held in January.

Roles and responsibilities

Open discussion

  • List etiquette? May be covered in the constitution.
  • linux.org.za and GLUG mailing list migration to glug.org.za.
  • Maybe help refresh linux.org.za, making it useful to all South African LUGs, not just GLUG.

Proposed Ideas

  • Monthly project donation:
    • Choose an open source project per month.
    • Members put contributions (optional) of their choice into a pool during the month.
    • At the end of each month the pool is donated to the project either in funds or hardware purchases or any other way.
  • Recommended hardware and vendors page:
    • Page of recommended hardware and vendors to support
    • GNU maintains a page for this.
    • Perhaps link to that
    • List some open source friendly vendors and perhaps a few points on why supporting these vendors is important in the long run.
  • TV/radio advert on free/open software?
    • Discuss how useful an advert on free/open software might be to get general public awareness.
  • Government initiative:
    • Throw some ideas around to see how we might be able to get government to better support and appreciate open standards (and open source as a by-product?).
  • Page with places offering gnu/linux training.
